Marilyn alone is a series of new works based on the images of the everlasting sex goddess, the symbol of a tragic Hollywood actress. Norma Jeane Baker or as we know her M.M.M.M . Marilyn Monroe Mortensen Miller.
Since Marilyn became a contemporary “Mona Lisa” - a symbol of a mysterious beauty hiding the real truth behind a smiling facade, she has been used and misused in art and advertisement over and over again. Unfortunately she has often been flattened and simplified.
This works of art are no exception as no one really knew the real Marilyn. We can only see her own projection of herself and fantasise the rest. Yes Marilyn was more than just a fantasy naturally, she was a real women privately of-cause . Without her blond wig and fake diamonds. She was often with powerful men in her bed.
But she would die alone , lonely..in the same bed, she had seduced them in.
Murdered by the same men in power she had given her body and soul.
But the art world and the cold world of Hollywood don't care do they ?
As Marilyn rightly stated
In Hollywood they pay a thousand dollars for a kiss but only 50 cent for your soul "
Now after almost half a century from her death, Marilyn is still an embodiment of Stardom.
It is probably because she gave to the camera more than any other person ever did.
She says about herself: “I knew I belonged to the public and to the world, not because I was talented or even beautiful, but because I had never belonged to anything or anyone else.”
A fear of rejection made her a mirror, reflecting human desires.
In this way she became a paradox, a living contradiction, ordinary and glamorous,
natural and artificial, smart and stupid, beautiful and grotesque,
ubiquitous and unattainable, familiar and distant, selfish and generous, insecure and confident,
victimised and dangerous, naïve and shameful, fragile and everlasting.
She was a child and mother of miscarriage, a daughter of a mentally ill mother,
a mistress and a wife to some , a love doll to some , a whore to some , a slut, an angel, a nurse
Yes , a fine line between sadism and masochism.
